Learn About “Stone” mantel

You may have heard the term “stone” mantel or “stone” finishes - remember, not all “stone” are all equal.  The precast, cast, paint grade “stone” products made from gypsum cements, foamed polyurethanes, Portland sand, and pigment with very small amount of crushed natural stone. 

Real natural stone in various textures and colors mined from the quarries are beautiful in themselves; some of them are like works of art.

Natural stone mantel

u   Noncombustible, will not deteriorate when exposed to high

     temperatures for extended periods.

u   Handcraved from block of natural stone, not from mold and

     is therefore always original.

   

u   Typical natural stone fireplace mantels are over 1000 lbs, we

    engineering our mantel less than 400 lbs each.

“Stone” Mantel

There are five main types of fireplace mantel - Natural stone, Cast stone, Precast concrete, GFRC plaster and wood. 

u   Made from mother natures, we travel the world to find the

    best  stones to carve our mantels.

u   Cost: $1000 to $2500, standard hearth piece included.  Installation cost: $750 and up.

Cast stone mantel

u   Noncombustible, possible deteriorate when exposed to high

    temperatures for extended periods.

u   Dry packed into molds under extreme pressure.   

u   Cast stone is usually "full weight" with sharp edges and rich

    texture, more uniform in color and texture than other cast

    products.

u   Made from crushed limestone sand, white cement and

    integrated pigment.

u   Looks and feels like real stone.

u   Cost: $1000 to $2500.  Installation cost: Medium and high.

Precast concrete mantel

u   Noncombustible, possible deteriorate when exposed to high

    temperatures for extended periods.

u   Wet poured or hand laid into molds.

u   Made from sand or aggregates, fiberglass reinforcement and

    integrated pigment.

u   Do Not looks and feels like real stone.

u   Cost: $1000 to $2500.  Installation cost: Medium.

u   Noncombustible, possible deteriorate when exposed to high

    temperatures for extended periods.

u   Hand laid or machine sprayed into molds.

u   Made from sand or aggregates, fiberglass reinforcement and

    integrated pigment.

u   Cost: $600 to $1500.  Installation cost: Low to medium.

GFRC Plaster mantel

u   Combustible means strict building code apply.

u   Hand-craved from pieces of solid wood.

u   Made from solid wood in different species or in prime MDF

    (Medium Density Fiberboard).

u   Designed to be stained or painted applications.

u   Cost: $1000 to $2500.  Installation cost: Medium and high.

u   Designed to be primed and faux painted for the final finish,

    most paint with white color.
